Abdominal surgery procedures include hernia repair, appendectomy, gallbladder removal, ulcer repair, colon resection and emergency abdominal surgery such as appendicitis.
Colon surgery can be required for cancer, severe diverticulitis and chronic conditions that affect the colon. Treatment involves removing the affected portion of the colon and re-connecting the healthy colon. In some cases a temporary or permanent colostomy may be needed if the colon needs time to heal or there is not enough healthy colon left. In some patients, this can be done by laparoscopic, minimally invasive surgery.
Gallbladder surgery is another area that has benefitted from laparoscopic, minimally invasive techniques. Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery removes the gallbladder and gallstones through small (5-10 millimeter) incisions in the abdomen. It is a safe and proven alternative to traditional open surgery and is generally done on an outpatient basis. Recovery time is significantly shorter than with traditional open surgery .
