FAQs about Health Programs & Classes
All prescription-based programs require primary care physician or specialist approval (renewed yearly) with a minimum of one medical diagnosis, such as deconditioned, high blood pressure, etc., for prescribed preventative and/or rehabilitative exercise in the gym area.
The prescription/referral establishes the need for prescribed exercise, ensures we are targeting diagnoses that are of priority to your provider, and confirms your provider is clearing you for exercise tolerance.
Other classes, such as group classes and special programs, do not need a prescription/referral and are open to any community member!
After completing a prescription-based program, HealthRidge offers participants the option to continue those workouts independently. Prior to starting your independent workouts, you will have 3 appointments with one of our specialists.
The first appointment includes:
- a review of your diagnosis, medical history, medications, and personal goals
- exercises determined in alignment with this information as a whole and designed to be tolerance-based to help you to not do an exercise or stretch that could be contraindicated
- readings for blood pressure, resting heart rate, blood oxygen efficiency, body fat composition, body mass index, basal metabolic rate, and healthy weight range. (This allows us to reevaluate and compare progress in future.)
The second appointment includes:
- having you perform the prescribed exercises and stretches from the initial appointment to ensure your tolerance for each activity
- establish correct adjustments, settings, form, etc. for your needs
- fine tuning best resistance tolerance for specificity.
The third appointment includes:
- making sure all of the exercises from the second appointment were well-tolerated and making changes, if needed.
- explaining your final prescribed exercise card for you to reference with equipment number, reps, sets, and settings.
- shadowing you as you go through the workout to help you “lock in” the exercise information and making you comfortable and confident with being independent thereafter.
After your 3 appointments you will be cleared to continue your workouts independently at our gym!
No prescription/referral is needed for HealthRidge Aerobic or Aquatic classes; however, it is needed for Aquatic Therapy (Rehabilitation) and for the HealthRidge gym exercise programs.
Not all programs/classes are covered by insurance. Only Silver Sneakers, Healthy Contributions/Renew Fitness, and FitOn Health programs are covered by insurance. SilverSneakers is for the individual with participating Medicare supplemental insurance plans. Healthy Contributions is for the individual with participating AARP Medicare Complete & Medicare Supplement insurance plans.
