Something big is happening on our Knightstown campus. We’ve officially broken ground on a
new Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), the second phase of a multi-year project to bring more
care closer to home.
Where We Started
We purchased the HCH John D. Pidgeon Knightstown campus property in 2020 with a plan to
develop it in phases. Phase one, a 26,000-square-foot facility offering Primary Care,
Orthopedics and Urology, opened in September 2025. Phase two is the new ASC.
What’s Coming
The 18,300-square-foot Ambulatory Surgery Center will include:
- Three operating rooms
- One procedure room
- Eight pre/post-operative patient rooms
- Four post-anesthesia rooms
At opening, the ASC will offer orthopedic, podiatric and pain management procedures. Over time, we plan to add specialties like urology, endoscopy and gynecological procedures. The center will employ up to 40 people across all levels of medical professionals and represents an investment of approximately $17.5 million. We expect it to open in early 2028.
Why an ASC?
An ambulatory surgery center is a modern facility built for same-day surgical, diagnostic and preventive procedures in an outpatient setting. Our hospital’s surgery department is nearing capacity, and this new center gives us room to grow.
Here’s what it will help us do:
- Prepare for the shift to outpatient surgery. More procedures are moving from inpatient to outpatient care, and we want to be ready.
- Improve access. More surgical capacity means we can better meet community demand.
- Recruit and retain physicians. Many surgeons prefer to operate in an outpatient setting, and their presence expands the specialties available locally.
- Lower the cost of care. Procedures that can be safely done outpatient often cost less.
- Improve the patient experience. Think easier parking and access, streamlined registration, shorter stays, and going home the same day when it’s clinically appropriate.
- Free up hospital capacity. Moving appropriate procedures out of the hospital leaves more room for patients with the most acute needs.
