Bone Density Tests Detect Osteoporosis

Bone density is used to detect osteoporosis in both women and men. It also helps determine if medicine you are taking for your osteoporosis is increasing your bone mass.

Our dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanner can detect changes in bone mass as small as 2 percent. DEXA is the most accurate method for measuring bone density.

We typically measure bone density of the spine and hip which generally have the greatest amount of bone loss and are at the highest risk of fractures. The DEXA can also measure the bones of the forearm.

Your bone density results are compared with the average results of healthy young adults of your sex at their peak bone mass. This information can help your health care provider diagnose osteoporosis or determine whether you need to take certain steps to protect your bone health.
